We Rumbled and We Won

Scrap Orchard has a fun contest each year for the creative teams. Each week we were given an assignment. The winner was determined by a cumulative score. Each week the public was allowed to vote for their favorite team. At the end of the contest, all the votes were added together and the team with the most cumulative votes won. Drum roll please …. I was on Chelle’s Creations team and we won! The contest was a bit of a stressor but I was on a great team- Jenn J., Jenn S., and Ronnie - and it was such fun to work with this group of gals. Of course, having Chelle’s products to scrap with really helped us win.

Here are our entries. Each one of us would make one section that would have to fit the theme of the week in one comprehensive layout.

Maison Cailler, located in Broc-Gruyère, Switzerland is a chocolate lover’s dreamland. Not only did we get a history of chocolate, we sampled the delectable products. Nicole and Dave were in chocoholic heaven. Dave looks a little sinister here, but the chocolate was sinful!

I think I gained 5 pounds just looking at Sweet Nothings, Angie’s new kit. It is a chocolate lovers bonanza. Check it out here.

Journaling by Nicole: I remember my grandmother drinking tea as a little girl. When I was older, I visited her and she explained to me about proper tea, as taught by her grandmother.

Start with boiling water. Pour into teapot and pour out. Pour in more boiling water and add tea bags. Wait two minutes. Select a bone china teacup. Pour milk into bottom of the cup-first of course. Add tea.

She said the final step was the most important one. Find a friend (or granddaughter) to share with.

I’m back. We did not have power along with a quarter million other households in the Kent/Seattle area. Furthermore, we were without Comcast <eek> from Thursday thru Monday-no phone, no internet, no TV. With all the rain we have had the past two days, most of the snow has disappeared. On the plus side, I got some gorgeous ice photos which I will scrap later.

Journaling: Times were tough during the Great depression, but life did not stop. Rollie played football for the Ellston Eagles. It amazes me that they took team pictures back then!

According to research, these old-fashioned 'leatherhead' football helmets from the early 1900s were as effective, and sometimes better, than modern football helmets - at least when it comes to injuries during routine, game-like collisions. Unbelievable!

Journaling by Nicole: When most people think of Maytag, they think of cleaning clothes. For our family, Maytag meant that and so much more. For more than 100 years, Maytag was nestled in tiny Newton, Iowa. When we moved there in 1979, we learned about Maytag from all angles – having “Old Lonely,” the friendly repairman, as your homecoming parade grand marshal to having activities shut down for two weeks each July during the plant vacation, to living on engineer row (our street had 5 engineers in all product groupings) to watching the ups and downs of strikes and labor negotiations and the impact on our future, to the final buyout by Whirlpool.

Maytag, as a company, was welcomed into people’s homes as the best cleaning products around. Maytag became part of our lives by us becoming part of their town.

6-Player Basketball

Nicole played guard on a six-on-six basketball team, which is a variant of women's basketball. It is played with the same rules as regular basketball, with the following exceptions: Teams have six players each instead of five—three forwards and three guards. Only forwards are allowed to shoot the ball. Forwards must stay in their teams' frontcourt and guards must stay in their team's backcourt. Once in possession of the ball, players may dribble the ball up to two times; at that point, the player must shoot (if a forward) or pass to a teammate. Iowa was one of the last states to play 6-Player ball.

Having a Hay Day

After driving an hour out to Redlinger Farms we found out it closed early that day. We ended up at Two Brother’s Pumpkin Farm and I think the kids had more fun. They searched for pumpkins, checked the animals, played in the barn, and stomped in mud puddles-a perfect kid day.

Purrfectly Spoiled

My cats, Kinnick and Vala, are lovely little angels, until they are not. After moving to Europe, it took me awhile to find products that they would use over here. I couldn't find Eukanuba for them to eat (well, that is not entirely true, I did find it in one pet store, but it cost 140CHF-Swiss Franc-for about 18 pounds of food). So, I switched to Iams wet and dry. That seemed to work well until I tried to give them fish flavor. In all of history, what cat has not liked fish? Well, apparently my little darlings.
Finally, I have tried a multitude of kitty treats that are available in Europe. Every single one has been sniffed at and left on the floor. So, now, any friends who come over are required to bring me kitty treats. So, yes they are lovely, spoiled little darlings who make me smile.

Last summer, Dave and I really enjoyed the delicious pear jam served by Gertraud during our trip to Austria. I thought I would try to make some jam. I have a glass topped stove, so I couldn’t use a traditional canner. Here is the page I made about the endeavor.
Journaling: Krista and I make the perfect pear, I mean pair when it comes to making homemade jam. It followed the theme of Wimpy’s old saying,"I'd like to invite you over to my house for a duck dinner. You bring the duck!"
“Krista, how would you like to make some pear jam? You bring the pears!” She did and we made some wonderful pear freezer jam.

Since the gourd is such a new plaything, she will probably touch it. She will probably smell it, and she will even try to eat it. After she gets bored with the gourd, she will want some real food like Oreos. Then she will say “No more pictures?”

A Beautiful Mind

In the movie, A Beautiful Mind, members of the Princeton math department present their pens to Professor John Nash, played by Russell Crowe. The ceremony, albeit very touching, was fabricated for the movie. Last June the scene came to life as a group of seniors in Dave’s Advanced Placement Psychology class, one by one, walked up to his desk at the end of class and presented him with their pens. He is honored, flattered, and plainly moved by his student’s actions. What a beautiful tribute to a teacher with such a wonderful mind.

For this page, I used a template Jessica Sprague #1.1.4. Boy does this make it easy to make a page. Half the work was done for you.

I found great elements and papers for this alyout by Echo Park Hybrid. Their, For the Record Collection is perfect.

The nighttime at Disneyland is simply spectacular. The World of Color is presented on a colossal scale. The dazzling spectacle uses explosive water fountains and color to deliver a truly fantastic experience. Touching on themes ranging from sea, sky and space to dreams, fantasy and love, the show is at times beautiful, majestic and dreamy and at other moments epic, explosive and wicked. Spanning the length of a football field and towering 200 feet into the air, the water show is mammoth. We got a little damp, but enjoyed it immensely nonetheless.

The bumper cars were so much fun. The kids enjoyed their turn behind the wheel and I even got some decent photos in spite of our car taking a few hits. Catch that determination on Alex’s face and Connor’s complete and utter joy from being behind the wheel. I used a quick page by Sahlin Studio to put this together. What a snap. I just added at title, some accents and brushwork, and another photo. DONE.
